head for the hills

My favourite way to take in a new city is to meander around the streets for hours, with no plan or agenda, just to see what I stumble across. This generally means that I miss a lot of the “attractions” (and sometimes, in hindsight, I realize that I should have been a bit more organized and seen/done more) but, y’know, I like to do things my own way.

Luckily for me, wandering aimlessly is the thing to do in Halifax (that, and drink. But the two can definitely be combined).  Here’s seven reasons why Halifax is the perfect city for this style of travel.

1) Compact downtown core.

No public transport or car necessary!

2) Wide footpaths.

They’re not so important in other cities, but in a place like Halifax where the whole city seems to be on foot (joggers everywhere) it’s nice to feel like you still have personal space.

3) Diverse architecture.

I’m always drawn to buildings as I’m walking through a city. (I like to believe I have somewhat of an “architectural eye.” This is probably due to the fact that I think  architecture is a super hot profession – but that’s a whole other blog post.)

From the Citadel views,

to the majestic St Mary’s Basilica,

to the beautiful old houses on Young Avenue,

to the University buildings,

there’s plenty of interesting architecture to take in as you stroll through the city.

4) Plenty of green space.

Rest your legs, read a book or take a nap (is there anything better than an afternoon nap in the sun?!)

5) Places to eat and drink smattered all over the city.

When hunger or beer o-clock strikes, you never have to walk far. Some favourite spots include The Henry House (7 beer sampler for $7), Cabin Coffee (log cabin decor, muskoka chairs out front, excellent coffee and a huge menu selection) and of course, any donair shop in town.

The Super Donair: donair meat, pepperoni, mozzarella, onions and donair sauce wrapped in a pita. Genius!!!

6) Historic sites throughout.

7) Enough 45 degrees hills to feel like you’ve had a good workout, even if you’re  walking at a snail’s pace!
