When I’m travelling, I’m always creating a mental playlist: a collection of songs that capture the mood of a place, or songs that just randomly come into my head as I’m strolling around.
For St John’s, Newfoundland, here are my top three tracks:
1) On account of the generally atrocious weather: Winter Wonderland (don’t let the term “spring” fool you, it still snows in St John’s in May!)
2) For the Irish influence: Galway Girl (which also happens to be on the set list for every pub band in town)

O’Reilly’s pub, with “live” music every night. Their punctuation errors aside, this place was a blast! The band was still pumping at 1am on a Wednesday night and we were even lucky enough to witness their local celebrity “Stevie” – a 70+ guy who gets his tap shoes out and does Riverdance-esque moves every couple of songs. Ahhhhh Newfoundland!
3) The third song represents the array of color splashed around St John’s. You may remember it from your kindergarten days…
RED and YELLOW
and PINK
and GREEN
PURPLE
and ORANGE
and BLUE
I CAN SING A RAINBOW,
SING A RAINBOW,
SING A RAINBOW TOO.
